Karen Murphy-Fitch(Artistic Director, Dancer) earned a BFA in Dance and Choreography from Rutgers University/Mason Gross School of the Arts where she was deeply influenced by teacher Laura Glenn (of the late Jose Limon Company). Karen continued to study with Ms. Glenn outside of her collegiate experience and became proficient in the Laban/Bartenieff Fundamentals and Labanotation Dance Analysis. Her dedication to the Limon technique coupled with her foundation in Laban/Bartenieff are the basis of her choreography today. In 1991 Karen received an MFA from Smith College focusing on choreography and dance analysis. At Smith College she was a recipient of a full teaching fellowship. At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, Karen's choreography was recognized by the American College Dance Festival in Bennington, VT and in Philadelphia, PA. Along with being an active member in the professional dance community during her graduate studies, Karen participated in Northampton's city dance community incorporating local dancers and professional dancers into common works.
Since 1989, Karen has performed with Works/Laura Glenn Dance, Prometheus Dance, Ted Hershey Dance Company, Brian Brooks and Company and a number of independent choreographers in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York. She has had the honor of performing with the Jose Limon Company in two original Limon works; A Choreographic Offering and Feast of the Harpies. She has been a part-time faculty member at Smith College, Amherst College and Hartford High School for the Performing Arts, as well as teaching at a number of local dance studios and dance camps throughout New England. She currently serves as a substitute teacher within the local dance community, allowing her the opportunity to teach at several studios and colleges in the area.
Her company, Falling Flight Project (formerly 'In the Company of Two'), was founded in 1997 while Karen was involved in studies for her degree in Nurse-Midwifery at Columbia University. The company was originally formed with two casts of dancers, one in New York and the other in Boston. The consolidation of the company took place in 2000 and her work has been performed in numerous local outlets as well as in New York and Connecticut since that time.
